Writing Rigorous IEPs to Teach Educational Standards (WRITES)

The Writing Rigorous IEPs to Teach Educational Standards (WRITES) standards-based IEP initiative is a project developed to train educators about writing data driven IEPs that promote access to the Common Core State Standards. Funded by a Federal State Personnel Development Grant through the Delaware Department of Education, WRITES is in the second year of a five-year roll out to train all Delaware school districts.

The Standards-Based IEP training consists of initial full-day training which covers the development of each component of the IEP including identifying data considerations, using assessment information, developing strong present levels of educational performance (PLEPs), identification of unique learning needs, and development of S.M.A.R.T. aligned goals to promote access to the general education curriculum.

After training, ACCESS Instructional Coaches provide on-site coaching to teachers and members of the school leadership teams. The coaching component provides teachers and members of the school leadership team with on-going support to improve their understanding and implementation of IEP development and S.M.A.R.T. goals.

WRITES participants will have on-going opportunities to collaborate with other professionals across the state.

An online discussion board will provide a medium for educators to connect, troubleshoot and share success both within and outside of their districts.

A SBIEP “institute” will connect the school leadership teams from across the districts for a day of learning, sharing, and planning. Educators attending the institute will receive additional training to focus on identifying needs related to IEP development as well as create action plans to build capacity and increase success in their schools and districts.
